Welcome

My name is John Mullarkey, and this web site was developed for two reasons:
-to help me keep track of my projects, and gains in experience and methods, and
-to share what I have learned with other weavers.

Just found out that I won Best of Show in Handwoven's Not Just for Socks competition. Could not believe it! I was just excited to make the finals, but never dreamed I'd make Best of Show. I put together a shawl out of weave-it squares that were then crocheted together. Thanks Amy for the yarn that started it all! Thanks Adrienne for modeling! You can check out pictures on the project page.

February was a month of teaching. At the beginning of the month I had a great time with my own guild - Weavers' Guild of St. Louis. We spent two days in Dale's dining room card weaving like crazy. This was a little intimidating because I knew all of these ladies. Kay was in the class, and she was the one who taught me how to weave on the floor loom! I had been threatening to teach her how to tablet weave for years. I'm really glad she came, and of course she picked it up right away. I hope she now understands why I kept saying "But you can do that with card weaving why not with a floor loom?"

At the end of the month I got to visit SWIFT members in Pendleton outside of Indianapolis. Susan of Trading Post Fibers Arts hosted in her restored farmhouse. Another great group of students! I believe teaching strangers is easier than teaching people you know. No expectations on either side. We weren't strangers when we finished however. Everyone seemed to really enjoy being shown the warped and twisted nature of card weaving.

Where does the time go. I apologize for not being more timely with updates to the website. I can happily say it has been because I have been weaving like crazy.

Some of the projects that were finished since we last chatted:

  • Barbed wire TWIST Sample Exchange
  • JOY band
  • Complex Weavers' Ribbons
  • Stained Glass Scarf
Some of the projects still in the works:
  • Hand spun silk hat band for SOAR Gallery
  • More ribbons for Complex Weavers
  • Weavette Shawl

And there are ideas aplenty to keep me weaving. I hope you are finding lots of inspiration to keep you weaving.

SOAR is the end of the month. That's a great thing, and a bad thing - at least for my weaving schedule. I'm going to come back with more ideas than I know what to do with which will of course push all of the projects that need doing to the back burner for a bit as I explore the new techniques learned.

Now you would think that would be enough, but my curiousity about new techniques is insatiable. There is currently a knitting machine in my studio that is giving me all kinds of ideas for merging woven and knit projects. Then there is the Collingwood Sprang book I just purchased. I really want to play with Sprang, why? Simply because I haven't tried it yet. This old dog loves to learn new tricks.

I've finally gotten some those projects finished. Unfortunately they are super secret still. One is a gift for a friend, and I don't want to spoil it by showing it off here before I see them in June at the Midwest conference, so you'll have to wait until then.

I finished the felted hat from Handwoven too. That was great fun, but very distracting from my more immediate projects. Ah well, it is the fun ones that get us through the more difficult ones.

I'm still finishing the TWIST band exchange piece. I call it Barbed Wire. It is a rams horn variation. I'll get pics up here when I'm done. If you want a piece of it, make sure to submit your own band to TWIST. If you like what you see here, and are feeling generous, feel free to donate for the maintenance of this website.

Much of the photography on this site was done by: Studio Menard

Some of the photos are my poor attempts at photography. I know, stick to weaving.
